Most of Nike’s Bespoke concepts were based on the designers’ creativity but some variations were taken from either a character from a film, a popular icon, or a famous insignia. For Fran Marchello, he took inspiration from a fictional character named Pikachu.
A Pikachu is one of the fictional species of Pokemon creatures from the Pokemon collection which has been featured on video games, anime, manga, books, and trading cards created by Satoshi Tajiri. The Pikachu was the first Electric-type Pokemon which signifies the common symbol for lightning and it can be identified on the character’s tail shape. Description wise, Pikachu is small with Yellow fur having Brown markings.
From this popular tiny character, Marchello was able to create his own Air Force 1 design. He utilized Yellow leather on the forefoot extending through the lace area including the Swoosh. The most prominent material which is the Orange suede was placed on the toe, tongue, collar, and heel panel while a Black leather piece was inserted in the midfoot and later used as a heel tab with Gold Nike branding and Swoosh. A hint of Teal comes from the shoe laces, vertical strip on the heel and Swoosh outline.
The midsole is also a Pikachu dominant with the bright Yellow tint and was paired with a gum sole. Also take note one of the shoe’s attractions – the “PIKA” (right shoe) and “CHU” (left shoe) labels on each dubrae.
